Terms of Service
Last updated: October 7, 2026
1. Acceptance of Terms
Complement (“the Service”) is operated by ComplementAI, LLC (“Complement,” “we,” “us”). By accessing and using the Service, you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service (“Terms”). If you do not agree to these Terms, please do not use the Service. We reserve the right to update these Terms at any time, and your continued use of the Service constitutes acceptance of any changes.
2. Description of Service
Complement is a learning platform built around spaced repetition, with optional AI features. The core Service is free. The Service includes but is not limited to:
- •Flashcard review with spaced repetition, Anki import, and card editing
- •AI features such as chat, explanations, definitions, practice questions, and card generation
- •Progress tracking and analytics
- •Collaborative study features
- •Integration with existing educational resources
3. User Accounts
To access certain features of the Service, you must create an account. You agree to:
- •Provide accurate, current, and complete information
- •Maintain the security of your password and account
- •Promptly update your account information as needed
- •Accept responsibility for all activities under your account
- •Notify us immediately of any unauthorized use
4. Acceptable Use
You agree not to use the Service to:
- •Violate any laws or regulations
- •Infringe upon intellectual property rights
- •Distribute harmful or malicious content
- •Attempt to gain unauthorized access to the Service
- •Interfere with the proper functioning of the Service
- •Create multiple accounts for fraudulent purposes
5. AI Features and Your OpenRouter Account
AI features run on OpenRouter, a third-party service that routes requests to model providers. Each account receives a one-time allowance of US$1.00 of AI usage on Complement’s OpenRouter account so you can try these features. We may change or end this allowance.
After the allowance is used, AI features require you to connect your own OpenRouter account. When you do:
- •Your use of OpenRouter, and of the model providers it routes to, is governed by their own terms and policies.
- •You are responsible for all charges on your OpenRouter account. OpenRouter bills you directly; Complement adds no markup and does not receive those payments.
- •If OpenRouter declines a request (for example, because your balance is empty or your key was revoked), the AI feature will not run. We do not fall back to Complement’s account.
- •We store the key OpenRouter issues to Complement in encrypted form and use it only to make requests you initiate. You can disconnect it in Settings or revoke it at OpenRouter at any time.
6. Subscription and Payments
Some features that run on Complement’s servers, such as semantic search, related cards, factuality checks, web and image search, and image exhibits in practice questions, are available with an optional paid subscription. The features included may change; when a feature becomes cheaper to run, we may make it free.
- •The subscription is sold on our website and billed in advance, monthly or yearly, through our payment processor, Stripe. Prices are shown before you subscribe.
- •It renews automatically until you cancel. You can cancel at any time from Settings, and you keep access until the end of the period you have paid for.
- •There is no free trial of the subscription.
- •Payments are non-refundable, except where required by law.
- •If we change the price, we will tell you in advance, and the new price applies from your next billing period.
7. Intellectual Property
The Service and its original content, features, and functionality are owned by Complement and are protected by international copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret, and other intellectual property laws. User-generated content remains the property of the users, but by uploading content, you grant us a license to use, modify, and distribute that content as necessary to provide the Service.
8. Medical and AI Disclaimer
Complement is an educational tool and does not provide medical advice. The Service is not a substitute for professional medical education, judgment, or practice. Always rely on your formal medical education and consult with qualified healthcare professionals for medical decisions. AI-generated content, including explanations, definitions, cards, and practice questions, can be inaccurate or incomplete; check it against authoritative sources before relying on it.
9. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Complement shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss of profits or revenues, whether incurred directly or indirectly, or any loss of data, use, goodwill, or other intangible losses.
10. Termination
We may terminate or suspend your account and access to the Service immediately, without prior notice or liability, for any reason, including breach of these Terms. Upon termination, your right to use the Service will immediately cease. You may also delete your account at any time through your account settings.
