Complement

Complement is the future of spaced repetition & learning.

Spaced repetition,
finally with a tutor.

A study tool for med students. You bring your Anki decks and your schedule, and we build the interface around them that makes studying faster.

The Product

It's Anki, but with a tutor inside every card.

You can chat, create cards, search, and practice right inside your deck. No alt-tabbing to a separate window. Everything shares the same context, so it actually knows what you're studying.

complementai.app/study

Explanations and context, right where you study.

Highlight any term for an instant definition. Pull up a chat when you want the longer explanation. Generate practice questions, all without leaving the card.

Why Complement

Anki taught a generation of doctors.
We're building the thing that comes next.

Anki's engine is about twenty years old and it's quietly brilliant. But the cards themselves are still flat text, basically the same as they were in 2006. There's no explanations, no context, nothing that can actually help you when you get something wrong.

Complement keeps the engine you already trust. Your collection, your scheduler, your habits all stay the same. We just add the layer that probably should have been there already.

One more thing, since this is the part I actually care about. The core of Complement is going to stay free. Anyone who's studying should be able to use this without having to pay $5 a month, and right now Plus subscribers are what makes that possible — some of the tools we lean on just aren't cheap to run yet. As they get cheaper, more of what's in Plus moves into Free.

A tutor in every card.

Highlight a term and you get an instant definition. Open a chat when you want the longer explanation. The card just stays on screen the whole time.

Board-style questions, generated.

Step 1 and Step 2 style vignettes, built from what's already in your own deck. If you miss one, a card gets generated for it automatically.

I most appreciated Complement after learning new concepts because I can use board style questions to see integration and the AI to explain cards in depth. It’s understanding rather than memorizing.

Medical Student — MS1, UCLA

The significantly better UI/UX compared to Anki helped me stay motivated. Card augmentation keeps things fresh and prevents pattern memorization.

Medical Student — MS1, NYU

Built-in AI chat is like having a tutor available 24/7. It helped me understand pathology concepts I struggled with for months.
