Data Usage Policy

This Data Usage Policy provides transparency about how Complement collects, processes, and utilizes your data to power our AI-driven educational platform. We believe in ethical data practices and are committed to using your information responsibly to enhance your learning experience.

1. Data Collection Overview

Learning Data

  • Study session duration and frequency
  • Card performance metrics (ease, retention, lapses)
  • Content interaction patterns
  • Knowledge gap identification

Content Data

  • User-created flashcards and notes
  • AI-generated content interactions
  • Shared deck contributions
  • Feedback and corrections

2. AI Processing and Model Improvement

AI features are powered by third-party model providers. When you use chat, contextual definitions, practice question generation, or card generation, your prompt and the study content involved are sent through OpenRouter to the provider of the model you choose (such as OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google) to generate the response, subject to their data-handling terms. Your first US$1.00 of AI usage runs on Complement's OpenRouter account; after that, requests run on the OpenRouter account you connect, which bills you directly. Complement records the feature, model, and cost of each request so you can see your spending in Settings.

Separately, we use aggregated and anonymized data to improve Complement's own algorithms:

  • Enhancing question generation algorithms
  • Improving content recommendation accuracy
  • Refining spaced repetition algorithms
  • Developing better learning path predictions
  • Identifying common knowledge gaps in medical education

Your individual data is never directly exposed to other users or used to train models without anonymization.

3. Personalization and Analytics

Your data powers personalized features including:

  • Custom study schedules based on your performance
  • Difficulty adjustments tailored to your knowledge level
  • Predictive analytics for exam preparation
  • Weakness identification and targeted practice
  • Progress tracking and milestone achievements

4. Data Retention and Deletion

Active Data

Your active learning data is retained as long as your account remains active to maintain your study progress and personalization settings.

Inactive Accounts

We do not delete inactive accounts automatically, but we may delete an account that has been inactive for an extended period.

Deletion Requests

You can delete your account at any time from Settings, and deletion takes effect immediately. We keep only de-identified records that cannot be linked back to you, and anything we are required by law to keep.

5. Research and Academic Use

With proper anonymization, we may use aggregated data for:

  • Medical education research publications
  • Learning effectiveness studies
  • Collaboration with academic institutions
  • Open-source contributions to educational technology

Individual users are never identifiable in any research outputs.

6. Third-Party Integrations

When you connect third-party services, data sharing is limited to:

  • Authentication and account linking
  • OpenRouter, when you connect your account: we store the key it issues to Complement in encrypted form and use it only for requests you make
  • Import/export functionality you initiate
  • AI model providers (your prompts and related study content, only when you use AI features — see Section 2)
  • Analytics services (anonymized data only)
  • Payment processing (handled by secure providers)

7. Data Portability

You own your learning data and can:

  • Request a copy of your decks, cards, and review history by email
  • Read and update your cards programmatically through Complement's MCP connector

8. Your Control Panel

Through your account settings, you can:

  • Choose which emails you receive and whether product analytics are collected
  • Connect or disconnect OpenRouter and agent (MCP) connections
  • Request a copy of your data
  • Delete your account
